How do I redirect a special needs child from wandering in social situations?
I have an autistic child in my youth group that disrupts the other teens by getting up and wandering around. What kind of intervention/redirection can I or the other aids use to keep him seated and focused on what we're doing?
First of all thank you for desiring to have this child in your youth group. People with autism have an impairment interacting with others. It is so helpful for them to have an opportunity to go someplace to interact with typically developing peers.
Here are my suggestions:
Write a simple social story. It could go something like this. We go to youth group to learn about God. At youth group we play games, then we sit and talk about God. When the leader asks everyone to sit down and starts talking it important for me to sit too. When the leader is done talking then I can walk around and get a snack.
Get the child a seat disc to sit on. This is a rubber disc that is about 14" round that defines where a persons spot is and works the core muscles. Studies have shown these improve concentration levels for special needs populations.
Give the child a "fidget" a fidget is a special toy that the child can hold and play with while you talk. It should be small and feel interesting. If the child really likes it, tell him it is for sitting time. If you are worried the child is distracted and won't hear you talking, I'm guessing he is having difficulty processing what you are saying anyways.
Your youth group has the chance to change a life and really help this child and their family. Give it time and prayer.

It seems like you have all your bases covered.
