So long as I am present, I don't mind my children talking to strangers. I think it is good for a child to know how to handle themselves with other adults, and to be able to learn to field questions, so if the parent is not present they know what information is ok to share and what should be kept to themselves.
We were in the doctor's office the other day, and my 7 yr old struck up a conversation with an elderly gentleman. The man asked similar questions as you, and my son answered pretty well. He did ask about which school my son went to but he was wearing a school shirt. My son didn't give his last name, or where we live or any other important information. The conversation seemed innocent enough, and I didn't think much about it.
