Should I get a wheelchair for my daughter?
My daughter has Cystic Fibrosis. She can walk of course but is just very frail and gets very tired out a lot and out of breath easily, especially lately since she's been particularly weak and had a bad infection she was fighting to get over. I was thinking of maybe getting a wheelchair to push her in, at least for when I take her out places and she gets tired. Do you think it would be a good thing to get? Where do you get a good enough quality one? She is 13.
I think a scooter makes far more sense. A scooter she can still independently use. A manual weelchair she will be dependent upon others to push when she is tired.
Many people think you should wait as long as possible before investing in a wheelchair or scooter. I disagree. It is not healthy for your daughter to get overly tired. You are probably already limiting where you go and how long you stay because she tires easily. It is better to prevent her from being over tired and to maintain a much of her heath as possible. The stigma of using a scooter or chair is lessening all the time. And half the stigma is eliminated when you refuse to let others influence how you feel about it yourself.
I waited too long before I invested in a scooter. Now I have used one for about 10 years and can still walk a little when the scooter is impossible to use because of access issues.
I KNOW that how people perceive me in the scooter is in large part based on how I interact with them. I smile at them if they look at me askance. I offer little kids rides on my lap or race them. No one pities me, because I don't pity myself.
Your daughter may be on SSI and then Medicaid would pay for her to have a mobility device if a doctor prescribed it for her. There are many relatively inexpensive scooters out there - I have an Amigo Go Go which you can get for about $900. It folds up like a wheelchair and fits in my trunk.
Craigs lists often has wheelchairs and scooters for sale. Call your local Center for Independent Living Center or United Cerebral Palsy and see if they have a "closet" of used mobility devices or know of one.

Going Down Stairs In A WheelChair!
What would be good gifts for an accident victim? She was previously a very active person?
What will help keep her from becoming discouraged as she recovers and comes to terms with the fact that she will no longer be able to do most of the things she loves, in the same way? I don't think she will be confined to a wheelchair, but her speed and maneouverability will be hampered.
First of all, be there for her. Try to include her in as many activities as you can. Drop by & bring her lunch or dinner. I don't know the extent of her injuries, but a hobby is a good way to keep someone busy. I like to scrapbook or crotchet. Everyone loves a good book. (Harry Potter books & The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks are my favorite)
