Wheelchair Threshold
A very Dear friend of mine who is only 39 yrs old ,is wheelchair bound,?
an is dire need of some home improvements ?
he is not able to do himself.Due to paralysis in his hands.he needs threshold bumper guards ,broken windows to be fixed ,bathroom repair and so on,these things will help make his life somewhat better,.Are there or does anyone know of any government loans or such,or know of anything or of any anything or any type of program that can help him,i am at my wits end on searching so Ive turned to the best resource i know of and that is the wonderful yahoo People here ,thanks and god bless you all
First go to your friends at church. Many churches have out reach programs where they will go in and do all of the repairs and make his home as good for him as it can be. Because churches have a broad cross-section of the community they have access to people who are very skilled in all areas of work.
Habitat for Humanity might be able to help though usually they build new homes with the future owners putting in sweat equity they might have a program for repairs and might wave the sweat equity for your friend.
Contact your communities building and permit department. They would not do the work but may be able to get you information on a group that can help.
Contact a newspaper. If you live in or near a large city get that paper. Tell them the whole story. If they run a human interest article about this man many people will donate time and materials for the repairs.
If your local television has a community action feature contact them to see if they will run a story about this man and what he needs.
If there is a local group like the Lions, Jaycees, American Legion, VFW or an Eagle Scout troop they might be able to help.

Threshold betwen bathroom and bedroom?
I just remodeled my bathroom and my husband got a stroke. SInce bathroom floor is higher than bedroom floor, there is a threshold between these 2 rooms, however, it is very hard for him to get into the bathroom with wheelchair. He can get in easily if he goes backward with wheelchair, but we need him to go forward because the set up for the shower, there is no room for him to turn around his wheelchair after he gets into this bathroom. Anyone has a good solution that we don't have to remodel our bathroom again? Help !!
I'm guessing that the height difference between the two rooms is going to be roughly 3/8", which is the thickness of most residential tile. You can have a flooring subcontractor "feather" the subfloor, meaning add a sort of a ramp out of concrete that takes up that subtle difference between the two floors. When they work with concrete, they can feather the concrete out in all directions so that no matter how you approach the transition you are on a slope. You'll see this often in commercial buildings if you look for it. It is not noticible, and carpet is installed right on top of it.
