Wheelchair Seating Positioning
How would you find the CENTROID of the human body?
I need to find the centroid of the human body for both a standing and seated position as part of design that I am putting together for an adaptive wheelchair design for a handicapped individual.
If anybody can please explain to me how to go about finding the overall centroid of a seated and standing human being I would greatly appreciate it.
I am assuming that you just make an assumption that the limbs and torso can be approximated as rectangular sections, with the head approximated as a circle.
If someone can give me a quick calculation or run-through of how this would be done, I would greatly appreciate it.

By centroid, I am assuming you are referring to the center of mass? In a ship, this point would be called the center of buoyancy. I know of no formulas to calculate this for a body, however you can experimentally determine this point by use of a model. Find a doll with movable limbs. Put the doll in the position you desire and then suspend the doll by several different points, one at a time. Extend the line from the string through the doll's body from each suspension point. Where these lines intersect is the center of gravity of the body. This technique works for any irregular shape of ANY kind as the center of gravity always has to be in a line directly below the point of suspension. Gravity says this must be the case. Where the lines intersect is the center of gravity as that is the ONLY point in common for any point of suspension of an object. Remember, this is only an approximation since the doll does not have the same density distribution as a human body, but it WOULD be accurate if you could model the same density distribution in the model as in a real body. However, it will be CLOSE to the actual center of gravity. I take it you are aware that Dean Kaman, inventor of the Segway, has developed a design for an articulated wheelchair that actually can climb stairs? It is the strangest thing to see in operation. I saw it in operation on a NOVA program on PBS a while back. Use your favorite search engine and look for Dean Kaman and his inventions and I am sure you will find a wealth of information.

How can I prevent my legs from falling asleep when I'm in a wheelchair 24/7?
I'm in a wheelchair and lately every time I sit at the computer my arms and legs fall asleep constantly. It's so annoying and uncomfortable. I was just wondering if there was a way to prevent this from happening so much? Maybe a certain position to sit in? I move around in my seat a lot but nothing works. Or ways to make the tingling feeling go away faster? Is there any medication that can be taken to make blood circulation flow better?
It is all about the wheelchair cushion. If your legs are falling asleep this means you are not paralyzed. People who are paralyzed have a bigger problem than feet falling asleep. They have a high risk of pressure sores due to circulation issues and can not feel it coming on. There are many high quality cushions made to minimize circulatory problems. My guess is that you probably have an inexpensive foam cushion, which is older and bottoming out. You can go for a Gel cushion an air cushion or a combination product. I suggest that you read the link below about wheelchair cushions and invest in a quality wheelchair cushion.
