What gift can I purchase for a handicapped man?
It's Christmastime and I'm looking to find something to buy for my dad. He's always in his wheelchair and has limited access to parts of the house. I want to get him something special so he can feel more like part of the family. Maybe some inspirational stuff would help because he often feels hopeless. Thanks ahead of time for all the help I can get! =)
My mom is in a wheelchair as well and lives in senior/handicapped housing.
Last year I bought her a tray that would fit on the arms of her wheelchair securely so she wasn't forced to eat dinner at the table all the time. She also uses it to work on her crafts and pay her bills, etc.
I also made her a cordless phone carrier for her wheelchair that fits on the handle so she doesn't have to worry about finding it.
Since your dad has limited access, maybe an intercom would be a convienence for him.
I am sorry he feels discourage and hopeless. I remember those days with my mom as well. I encouraged her by spending time with her and making the time to do so regularly. It really seemed to help her to know she could rely on me.

Wheelchair?
Recently some people that I know have gotten into accidents, and are now wheelchair bound. A part of me wants to be there with them in a chair next to them. Is it because of empathy? I don't want them to go through it alone...Im just confused on why I am wanting to be in a chair....help
I just got news that the wheelchair I was put in "temporarily" well I suddenly got welcomed into the wheelchair club. For me I am scared all the time. Today was my first day back to work and there are no wheelchair access doors, the "handicapped" bathroom stalls are too small, My arms are always tired. My hands hurt. I can't move very fast and I am becoming severly depressed. I am telling you this because Your friends may feel this way right now too. Its going to take time and help. Help them. Give them someone to practice get up steep ramps and also getting down them without crashing into something because they are not used to controling the chair. I love to hear "can I get that door for you" because I can't figure it out. I am all alone. I have no one by my side to let me try to get used this metal prison. You are a blessing to your friends. Please do that for them. Don't wish for this. Even if you did a "day in the life" of a wheelchair bound person you can't get. I did this in college. It was a breeze. I thought I can deal with this. When I went into the wheelchair this time I said oh yeah this will be easy. I would never have been able to grasp the very concept of the new world I live in now.
