Wheelchair Motors
Is it legal is the USA to rig up a wheelchair so that it can travel at speeds up to 40 mph?
A neighbour of mine has to use a wheelchair but complains that it is too slow. Can this friend of hers attach a new motor that would allow her to get up to 40 mph top speed from her wheelchair? If so, then would she legally be allowed to zip down the sidewalk at that speed?
1. Powered wheelchairs are battery powered- using an electric motor that goes 40mph would mean either HUGE batteries, or a battery that dies in 3 minutes. A gasoline powered wheelchair means they can never use it indoors.
2. No wheelchair frame made could tolerate the stress of 40mph for very long. Most of them will collapse with a 5mph collision! Hit a small bump at even 15mph and most will shatter something major. Try to turn at about 15mph and the front casters will sheer off and the chair will collapse. Try to stop at 20mph and the electro-mechanical brakes will rip apart.
The bearings cannot handle the heat build up and will seize. The plastic structural elements will break. The chair user will very likely die. The chairs today are built strong, but not anywhere near that strong.
3. 40mph on a sidewalk with inches or less of clearance? 90 degree turns at speed? Zipping along at speed and hitting an uneven patch or a soft curb?
4. If ANYONE is hurt in this process, the chair user and probably the person who modified it would immediately go to jail and be sued for damages. I doubt it is technically illegal, but the liability is HUGE.
5. Most chair users I know have mediocre reflexes,and can barely control a chair straight through a doorway at 6mph- what are the odds your friend can shoot down that skinny pathway at that speed?
6. Thinking about using it on the road instead? That IS illegal. It would be nearly impossible to make a wheelchair road legal and still be able to use it in the house.
7. Whoever paid for the chair (Medicare, insurance, etc.) will certainly not cover it for repairs and service- even to the unmodified parts.
8. Did I mention that the user will probably die?
Sorry for the rant. Most of my clients beg for more speed- the fact that many of them can already tool faster than I can walk does not satisfy them. It is sort of like watching food cook in the microwave and wishing it could go faster, forgetting that for most of history it used to go a lot slower.

I have 2 large electric 12 V DC motors, unlabeled, how can I measure the amps needed to run them?
The Motors are large 12 Volt motors from an electric wheelchair, I'd like to use them for a motorized project, but i need to know the amperage to get a speed controller that will work for the project
Connect 12 volts through an ammeter.
Or read the nameplate on the motor, that usually has a current or wattage number.
