First I'd like to thank you for your supportive comments. An ever increasing number of MD's support and refer to Chiropractors. Many physical therapist utilize manipulation and Osteopaths (DO's) also use the technique. You rarely will hear from a person first hand who says a Chiropractor made them worse, often it is someone giving their uneducated opinion. There is a Psychiatrist who runs several websites that rip chiropractic ( they all feed into each other!) and he was even sued for putting out false accusations.
Understand that in healthcare, everyone is fighting for a piece of the pie and this often pits different providers against each other. We Chiropractors have the lowest malpractice rate of any doctor and yet people still hang on to this idea that we hurt people all of the time. It just isn't the case.
We live in a society that has drugs and surgery marketed to us as if the human race didn't exist before the advent of antibiotics, pain killers and hip replacements. Practicing healthcare now means you treat the symptom, not the problem.
If you find someone who says don't go to a Chiropractor ask them why. They will respond with " I went once or twice and it didn't help" or " I had a friend who went and they only got worse". Sometimes this may be the case but it is because of the persons expectations, not the failure of the procedure. Chiropractic, much like physical therapy, is a physical medicine. It isn't a quick fix and often people present with problems that have been bothering them for years or serious conditions that came on recently and they expect miracle cures that just would defy the laws of nature!
The modern Chiropractor utilizes many methods to treat a wide range of conditions. Unfortunately people only point to the adjustment as "chiropractic" and (usually out of ignorance) state an opinion based on misinformation or prejudice. For every person who claims that they put forth an honest effort through chiropractic treatment that wasn't favorable I can point to fifty who will say the opposite.
Chiropractic is well accepted both in the community and in the medical world and as people become more aware of the dangers of drugs, poor posture , obesity and the importance of a balanced body, it's popularity will continue to grow.
