Travel Wheelchair Wheelchair Travel Outside of the United States... ?
...Traveling outside of the U.S. in a wheelchair, easiest (and most difficult!) destinations, and strategies?
I went to Sydney Australia and had a FANTASTIC time. The city is clean and the people are friendly and we got into lots of things for free or my friend went in free as my attendant. Also there's this GREAT accessible cottage in the Hunter Valley Wine country that was built accessible. You can also get CHEAP seats at the Sydney Opera House. I think ours were 50% off.

What wheelchair-bound Canadian travelled around the world to raise money for spinal cord research?
RICK HANSEN is the wheelchair bound Canadian athlete who toured around the world to raise money for research and spinal cord injury awareness.
At the age of 16, Rick sustained a spinal cord injury and would never walk again. He was paralyzed from the waist down. After seven months, Rick returned home from rehabilitation in Vancouver. Slowly, he learned how to deal with his new life, and with the encouragement of his volleyball coach, stayed involved in sports. He discovered wheelchair basketball and other sports; set new goals for his life; and began to make new dreams.
He was recruited by coach and mentor, Stan Stronge from the Vancouver Cablecars wheelchair basketball team. In 1976, Rick enrolled at the University of British Columbia, and was the first person with a disability to graduate with a Degree in Physical Education.
Between 1979 and 1984, Rick turned his focus to track, winning nineteen international wheelchair marathons, the world title four times and nine gold medals at the 1982 Pan Am Games. He won a gold and silver medal at the 1984 Paralympic Summer Games in Stoke Mandeville, and a gold, silver and bronze at the1980 Paralympic Summer Games in Arnhem, Holland. He also competed for Canada in the 1984 Olympic Games in track, as an exhibition sport, and was the first person to break the two-hour time in a wheelchair marathon.
On March 21, 1985, he set out on a journey that would make history. The journey was called "The Man In Motion World Tour." Its purposes were to raise funds for spinal cord injury research and to make communities more accessible and inclusive. Every day, Rick completed the equivalent of three marathons - through all kinds of terrain, in all kinds of weather. The journey took the Tour through 34 countries.
In August 1986, Rick and the team arrived back on Canadian soil, in Cape Spear, Newfoundland, ready to begin the final leg of the journey home to Vancouver, and their final challenge: crossing the prairies in the middle of winter.
On May 22, 1987, thousands of people lined the streets to welcome Rick and the team home. The Tour raised $26 million for spinal cord injury research, rehabilitation and sport!
[Another point of interest: "St. Elmos Fire" ("Man in Motion") is best known as the theme of the similarly titled 1985 film "St. Elmos Fire"; however, it was originally written for Rick Hansen, the wheelchair bound Canadian athlete who tours the world to raise money for research and to increasespinal cord injury awareness. Performed by John Parr and adapted for film, "St. Elmos Fire" became an instant hit, earning a Grammy nomination.]

Before reading your long question, I had a knee ache (probaly because I walked 12 kilometers today). I took a 600mg cpsule of ibuprofen then began reading. Now, after reading about JP2 for 5 minutes I feel much better. Should I call the Vatican to let them know that we have a second "miracle candidate" ?
