Travel Mobility
Applying for a Canadian Passport Overseas?
My cousin was born in Vietnam and he's a Canadian citizen. He's currently on 24-month probation in Ontario but there is no travel/mobility restriction in this order. He left Canada in August with approval of his probation officer and entered Vietnam with his Vietnamese birth certificate for family emergency. Now it's time for him to return to Canada and he needs a Canadian passport to return. If he went to the local Canadian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City to apply, would that be a problem since he's on probation in Canada? Does the court order need to be shown to the consular officer?
Probation status is irrelevant.
Not having your Certificate of Canadian Cirtizenship is.
The Canadian Consulate may or may not issue travel documents if he cannot prove his citizenship. Most likely it won't.
If he had time to get his probation officer's approval before departure he also had time to get emergency travel documents that would allow his return to Canada.

Is there any travel required if one becomes a staff writer for a newspaper?
Would this job be ideal for someone with mobility issues (who cannot drive)?
Most newspaper staff writers do have to get out of the office, and in fact, most go out a lot. Some stories can be covered by phone, but in general, you have to be there in order to write about it.
Have you considered copy editing? There would be no travel at all. You'd check stories for accuracy, grammar and style. You'd write headlines and lay out pages. It's an important, unsung job, and the people who do it are *definitely* journalists -- often very good ones, in fact.
