Air Travel with a patient?
One of my relative is on wheel chair and she needs to be transported to some other country. My question, 1)- do I have to book some special ticket for her, 2)- Do I have to inform about the case before booking the ticked from a travel agent, and 3)- How do I go about informing the airline and what should I ask them to arrange for?
The airline can certainly provide as much assistance as required, and provide a special wheelchair depending on your needs. There are 3 main types of wheelchairs available for air travel depending on how much your relative can move. If they can walk but only short distances then a normal chair will be fine. If they need the chair to move around completely but can get onto the plane themselves this is different and if they are totally unable to move and 100% reliant on a wheelchair then there is a special type for this as well.
Their normal chair will need to be checked in as it is too wide for an ordinary airline aisle however.
Whilst your travel agent should arrange this for you there is always the chance that they will not or the message will not be inputted correctly. It is always safest for you to call the airline after the booking has been made and ensure the information is entered just to be safe. It only costs you another call but is worth the peace of mind.
Generally there is no special authority or condition required for wheelchair passengers unless they have been in hospital during the 2 weeks before travel or they have some other type of medical condition that will require a doctors authority to travel. Again this will vary by airline so it is best to check with them and their "special handling unit:.
