Is there anything you can do to improve 4x2 traction?
I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado. Don't tell me to put weight in the back or get new tires...I know that. I mean conversions. To four wheel drive or positive traction and what are the costs? Thanks.
Converting to 4wd is going to be prohibitively expensive. Much cheaper to sell your truck and buy a 4wd one for a couple thousand more.
You can get a limited-slip/posi/locker for your differential though. Expect to pay $300-600 for the unit itself depending on what you want, then a couple hundred for installation. Installation costs will vary depending on what you choose as well.
A selectable locker will be the most expensive on both accounts, but will operate like a normal differential when not in use, and when engaged, fully locks the diff.
A limited slip or posi will be in the middle of both ranges. It does not fully lock the differential, but it does provide some torque bias to the slipping wheel. It is also always 'engaged', so there are no reliability issues. Limited performance is the biggest drawback.
An autolocker can be either expensive (~500 for a Detroit?) or relatively cheap (~$300 for a lockright). Istallation for a detroit is also more expensive, while installation of a 'lunchbox locker' like the lockright or Aussie Locker is on the cheaper end.
If you don't know someone who can do the work for you, call around to local shops or ask around for referrals to someone that sets up differential gears.

why do front wheel drive cars have better traction than rear drive cars?

because they have more weight over the drive axels therefore making the wheels that have the actually pulling power or traction heavier. The motor on most frontwheel drive cars sits right over the wheels its turning and your traction comes from the front of the car in a pulling manor instead of from behind in a pushing manor . I hope this helps .
