Tires Pneumatic Why is Scotland the home of so many inventions?
A flag waving question yes, but it does seem quite odd. Can anyone suggest why the Scottish character seems to be so attuned to great invention. Remember what a tiny and isolated country it is. Scots invented all of the the following:
Adhesive
Anaesthetics
Antiseptics
Bank of England
Encyclopedia Britannica
Fax machines
First cloned mammal
Football
Golf
Harry Potter
Hypodermic syringes
Jekyll and Hyde
Macadamized roads
Microwave ovens
Penicillin
Peter Pan
Pneumatic tyres
Postage stamps
Radar
Refrigerators
Sherlock Holmes
Steam engine
Telephones
Television
The telegraph
Themos flasks
US Navy
Whisky
Most early adhesives were animal glues made by rendering animal products such as the Native American use of buffalo hooves. Native Americans in what is now the eastern United States used a mixture of spruce gum and fat as adhesives and as caulk to waterproof seams in their birchbark canoes.
The first cloned mammal was Dolly the sheep, cloned in Edinburgh University, Scotland, by 'English' geneticist Dr Ian Wilmutt... equally though... The vacuum flask was invented by the Scot Sir James Dewar, while working as a scientist at Oxford University, 'England' in 1892... so you can have one of those.
Harry potter's author JK Rowling was born in Chipping Sodbury, England.
Most of the modern forms of football are derived from ancient games, like harpaston and harpastrum, which we're played in Greece and Rome. Although so called 'soccer' football was a rugged, undisciplined type of football that took root in the Middle Ages in England.
The Bank of England was founded in 1694 as a commercial bank by William Paterson at Threadneedle Street, London. It's main office still stands on the street of that name. The banks nickname has always been The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street.
Percy Lebaron Spencer (9 July 1894 - 8 September 1970), an American, was the inventor of the microwave oven. Spencer was born in Howland, Maine,
Penicillin on bacteria was first observed by the Scottish biologist Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928. Although he recognized the therapeutic potential of penicillin, it was not until 1941 that a group of biologists working in England, including Oxford's Sir H. W. Florey and E. B. Chain, purified the substance and established its effectiveness against infectious organisms and its lack of toxicity to humans. So, I'll give you half a point for that one...
The first recorded steam device, the aeolipile, was invented by Hero of Alexandria, a Greek, in the 1st century AD. In 1663, Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquess of Worcester, England published designs for a steam-powered engine for pumping water. The first piston steam engine was developed by French physicist Denis Papin in 1690.
American Congress authorized the building of the first vessels of the Continental Navy, literally the birth of the US Navy, on October 13, 1775.
As for whisky... well, Scotch Whisky maybe but I'll think you'll find the Irish may have something to say about the origins of a grained based alcoholic drink...
...and I could go on.
Scotland seems like a great place, never been there myself but I'm told the scenery is stunning and despite the English/Scottish past history the people are very friendly... and I'm sure, as a proud country rich in cultural achievements, they'd prefer it you you celebrated them for things that they 'have' actually done...

Revo with pneumatic tires
Silly question (yet again)?
I was just randomly reading the manual for my daughters pram...she has one of those 3 wheelers with the pump up wheels (hubby calls them pneumatic tires BTW) . Well, I noticed that I can lock the front wheel so it doesn't swivel (in hind sight, I realise I did actually know this but never gave it a second thought)
Anyways, I have NO idea why you want to stop the front wheel from swivelling....and I wonder if my ignorance is leading me to miss out on some fandangle function of my pram while other mummies are cashing in something amazing that can be done when this wheel is locked into place....
So, does anyone have a pram that can do this and fo you EVER lock the front wheel into place and most of all WHY WHY WHY?
WHat am I missing out on? LOL
Rainwriterm
What you wrote makes perfect sense BUT.....
The manual also specifies that the pram should not be used at high speed or on uneven terrain....lol ...
I don't have one of these, but I really want one. We call them jogging strollers here.
Fixing (locking) the front wheel can help a lot on bumpy and uneven terrain. Your front wheel will keep you going straight instead of veering to the sides. It's kind of like pushing a bike. If you're pushing it forward, you have to use the handlebars to help you keep the bike going straight instead of turning. If you push it backwards, it'll stay straighter. Locking the front wheel makes it so that you can't take those really cool turns on a dime, though.
Lock the wheel and take it out for a spin to see how you like it. I've heard some people say that they would never want one that couldn't lock, and some people say that they wish theirs wasn't fixed. I think the preference comes from what they use it for.
Edit: ha! that's kind of funny. Maybe it helps on cracked side walks or gravel paths? Maybe it won't be too beneficial for you.
