This Buzz Around
Recently dozens of wasps have been buzzing around the bushes in my garden. What are they up to?
This year, despite plenty of fallen apples, there has been a notable absence of wasps about - I have only had three in the house all year. Today it is overcast and windy but quite mild. They simply mill around, never contacting one another and never settling. I am 81 years old and have always lived in semi-rural locations but have never before witnessed this behaviour. The bushes in question are viburnum tinus and golden privet, about 10 feet tall.
I've been a beekeeper for 30yrs and get a lot of calls from our County Agent to remove hives every year. This time of year I get a lot of wasp and hornet calls from people thinking they have bees. On a couple occasions I have witnessed exactly what you describe. I can only surmise, but I think it's the response to a dead or missing queen. Unlike bees, wasps and hornets don't all over winter, only the queens. I think when she leaves nest to hibernate the workers are confused and fly around aimlessly looking for her. Maybe an entomologist out there could set us straight. RScott

Why is American Idol bigger news than the LBGP?
Watching the news all week in LA - there has been MORE talk about American Idol than the Long Beach Grand Prix.
In years past, there was HUGE buzz around town leading up to the Grand Prix. This year, not so much.
Is American Idol THAT much better than the IRL?
In the CART years of the early to mid 90s - there was ALOT more buzz about the LBGP.
There doesn't seem to be much buzz about the Celeb race either this week. LA goes nuts over its celebs.
Because LA is celeb-obsessed (ugh).
You look at the NASCAR races at Fontana... no interest. I know the racing series aren't the same; but what I've concluded by reading the question, that market doesn't seem to care 'bout racing all that much.
BTW, I couldn't care less 'bout Stupid Idol. Overrated piece of trash!
