What is Henry Wadsworth Longfellow saying?
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was one of America's most outstanding poets. He also was a lover of mathematics. Through one of the characters in his book Kavanagh: A Tale, published in 1965, Longfellow said the following:
"How dull and prosaic the study of mathematics is made in our school-books; as if the grand science of numbers has been discovered and perfected merely to further the purpose of trade. There is something divine in the science of numbers.....It holds the sea in the hollow of its hand. It measures the earth; it weighs the stars; it illumines the universe; it is law, it is order, it is beauty. And yet we imagine - that is, most of us - that its highest end and culminating point is book-keeping by double entry. It is our way of teaching it which makes it so prosaic."
Explain, in your own words, what Longfellow is trying to say in this passage.
Math is deeply cool and does all kinds of elegant and important stuff, but we're taught it's boring and only good for doing sums in cashbooks.
