Sling Transfer How do I transfer direct heat to mechanical work?
I am taking a thermodynamics lab this semester and our task is to see how far we can raise a quarter using the heat energy of two candles. I was just wondering if there are any experts (or anyone) out there that have any ideas? One of the main constraints of this project is we can only use the heat from the candles to produce the work. Example: we can't have the candle burn a piece of string that triggers a sling shot to go off because that involves potential energy.
My idea for the project would be to simply create a big thermometer where you have a quarter and the candle heats up alcohol which would expand (how much it would expand I'm not sure). Another idea is to use some sealed container with a gas inside which, when heated up, would expand and that pressure could somehow be used to raise the quarter.
Any ideas would be helpful, thanks in advance!
You could use the hot air from the candles to fill a bag, perhaps a food container, and that to lift the quarter. You can get a LOT of distance that way.
Use the thinnest bag you can get, NOT one with a zipper on it. Difficulty will be routing the hot air into the bag without burning it.

These excellent match slings were developed by Mid and Nancy Tompkins for use in High Power Long Range and Smallbore shooting. The one and one fourth inch width was chosen because it provides excellent stability but does not transfer pulse effectslike wider slings sometimes do. Both slings are designed to work without keepers but can be used with a one and one fourth inch keeper if desired. These slings can be used with hooks or push button detachable sling swivels and attach to the rifle on the front swivel only - they are not for service rifle competition. The leather sling is 11 oz. full grain burgundy latigo leather which measures almost 0.200 inch thick. Biothane is extremely strong Mfg: Tompkins-Gallagher
