Why can't elderly people walk?
I am almost 20 years old, before my grandparents died, they had trouble walking, same with my great aunts and great uncles. I am always seeing commercials for Hoveround and Scooter Store for scooters and power chairs for these people. Can someone tell me why many elderly have trouble walking, standing, going to the bathroom on their own, changing clothes, in addition to other simple daily activities?
Well, for walking, many elderly people have arthritis. This creates pain in the joints which can create pain to even walk.
For changing clothes and living on their own and things like that, it just comes with age. They could have Alzheimer's and it might make it hard for them to live on their own because they forget things easily. For example, they may forget to lock their doors at night and get robbed. There are many other reasons for living in a group home, though.
You may have heard that elderly people have "accidents". Sometimes they can't control their bladder and they will soil their pants. Other times, the elderly people can't get to their bathroom quick enough or don't feel the urge to go to the bathroom until they have to let it out! It gets tough when you get older like that.
