A lot of times when people are defining an impersonal school they are discussing the individual care that you recieve from the professors who may have 200 student's in a lecture. They are not going to know your name and will farm out their grunt work to Graduate Assistants.

A big part of living on campus is helping you to overcome the obsticle of not having any friends. If you are living on-campus you will find that you will become friends with people on your floor, or in your building. Not always your roommate, but others who are around you that you will naturally gravitate towards, especially since all of you are having a shared expereince with one another. Go to programs offered by your Resident Assistant in your hall, that will allow you to meet people.

Also, when you go to orientation, introduce yourself to people. Everyone there is trying to make friends are receptive to new people. This will allow you to get a foot in the door.

Also, pay attention to facebook. Prior to attending the school it is almost a given that the school will have a page that eitehr they started, or someone else who is attending in the same academic year you are attending. This is a wonderful way to network with people and set-up meetings prior to even arriving on campus. Orientation, whether during the summer or right before school starts, provides social activities and informal activities to get to know other people.

Finally, if still isolated, there are a number of clubs and organizations you should look into while attending the school. Don't be afraid to shop around and see if this an activity that interests you, as well as others. Typically there are all types of clubs and groups on campus, offering multiple activities.
