Recliner Tilt Back
Will iI ever get this sight out of my head?
Ok I'm an emt, have been for about five years. Last week I had a call I just can't get out of my head. It was a gunshot vic. She was younger early 30s. Self inflicted to the neck with a shotgun. It was bad she was beyond help. I just keep thinking about it not enough to interfere with my normal life of sleep but I find things bringing my thoughts back to the call. When people sleep with their head tilted back in a recliner chair. Or people who just stare off into space that really has been getting to me. Their was one other call that got me like this a husband and wife in a house fire I don't think of that one so much any more but I don't think that their is as much to remind me of that one. Anyone with similar experiences. Please don't just tell me to get help this doesn't interfere with my life in a serious way that I believe I would need therapy. I just want to know if I'm stuck with this for life.

My brother , who was a marine for 6 years and saw horrific things, was also an EMT for 7 years--and also saw some absolutely horrible things.
Your mind tends to go back to things that arouse strong emotion--whether it be good or bad.
I don't think you're stuck with this for life.
I think it works much like grief does---we each experience the initial shock--and our mind returns to it time and again.
But, with time, I think it happens less and less.
You work a stressful, yet wonderful and importasnt job.
I've worked in psych for 21 yrs and have seen some awful things, myself.
I just get through each day, one at a time.
