Power Chair Mobility
Is it wrong to give someone a hard time for using an accessible washroom, if it appears they don't need it?
I'm always a little conflicted in this situation: waiting patiently for the one and only accessible washroom to be vacant so I can use it with my power chair and attendant. After listening to the toilet flush, the water run, the towel dispenser unrolling, the door unlatching, it opens....and out walks somebody who has no obvious reason for needing the washroom (no mobility device, no attendant, no tattoo on their forehead identifying their hidden disability). Should I ask them why they need it? What should I say??
How would you know for sure that they don't need the disability accessible one? Not all disabilities are easily visible on the outside and it's not only people who use a wheelchair or other mobility equipment or have an attendant who need to use the disability accessible toilet. Some people may be able to walk, but may still need the accessible toilet because of the grab bars, wider space or more privacy.
Some people have difficulty getting up or sitting down unsupported. Some people have difficulty moving around or balancing in narrow stalls. Some people need privacy and space to empty a catheter, change an adult diaper or control their blood sugar. Some people are too claustrophobic to use smaller stalls. Those are just some examples of things you wouldn't necessarily see on the person, but might nevertheless cause them to need the accessible toilet as much as you do.
I don't think you should ask them why they need it. People should not have to justify themselves all the time for needing to use disability accessible facilities. People with hidden disabilities usually have it hard enough as it is with everyone questioning their disability and right to use accommodations and facilities for the disabled. Some people actually have disabilities that make it very hard for them to deal with confrontations from random strangers. And it also just isn't any of your business what their disability is. That's sensitive information to some people.
Contrary to disability parking, there are usually no laws or rules about who can use disability accessible toilets. While the decent thing to do is to not use them unless people actually need them, and to give priority to those who need them, there isn't really anything that says others are not allowed to use them, or that people with disabilities have the right to "police" who uses them.
I recommend that you ask yourself this: Would you rather confront people and risk making the life of people with genuine disabilities even harder by being yet another person that harasses them about their disability not being visible enough, or would you rather give them the benefit of the doubt and leave them alone? If they don't actually need the accessible toilet, chances are they'll feel embarrassed when they see a person with disability waiting for it when they come out and that alone might teach them a lesson without anyone confronting them about it.
I know a couple of people who need the accessible toilet, but don't "look like it". I have needed the accessible toilet myself too at times when my disabilities have been particularly bad, and you might not realize it by looking at me for a few seconds when I come out of the stall. I've actually nearly injured myself trying to use a regular stall, because of my disability. I never use accessible stalls unless I need them and can't use the regular stalls. Having a form of autism in addition to my physical disabilities, I would not be able to handle it well if someone confronted me about my disabilities and use of accessible facilities while I was at my worst.

Capital Mobility and Tax Competition
$71.7
Tax competition and coordination is one of the most pressing issues for tax authorities in modern economies, but it is a highly controversial subject. Some argue that tax competition is beneficial by forcing governments to impose efficient tax prices on residents for the provision of public services. Further, some argue that tax competition is also beneficial by limiting the power of governments to levy taxes. Others take a different view in a world without coordinated tax policies, governments choose suboptimal levels of public services financed by inefficient taxes that are either too high or too low by ignoring spillovers imposed on other jurisdictions. Capital Mobility and Tax Competition draws out the most important issues of uncoordinated tax policy at the international level for crossborder transactions. The discussion focuses on mobile tax bases, specifically in relation to investment and financial transactions. The main issue for consideration in this survey is whether taxation of income, specifically capital income will survive, how border crossing investment is taxed relative to domestic investment, and whether welfare gains can be achieved through international tax coordination. This survey derives some of the key results on the taxation of international investment in variants of one model of multinational investment. Finally, the authors emphasize the problem of tax competition and financial arbitrage, an issue which is somewhat neglected in the existing survey literature. The Contexts of Social Mobility: Ideology and Theory
$49.34
This book contains a major statement by one of Americas most preeminent sociologists on what remains an important problem in American history and social analysis: the nature and extent of movement within American society from one status to another. The most important images of mobility involve selfimprovement by changing location (going to the frontier, coming to the big city), and by changing social class (secondgeneration immigrants). Almost all sociological and historical analysis has been limited to these themes. Strauss extends the concept to a wide range of ideologies, institutional contexts, and social movements; his analysis is based on a formal theory of status passage and develops a partial theory of mobility. Strauss addresses a theme that underscores much of one strand of his work: the changing articulation of individuals with their social structure and institutions. The book follows on from the theoretical presuppositions of Discovery of Grounded Theory and the formal theory presented in Status Passage. Strauss was continually concerned with American social and intellectual life in its historical and contemporary manifestations. No one else has looked at the important phenomenon of mobility in this broad a context and from this point of view. The book remains important to those concerned with the social history of America and with problems of social change. Anselm Strauss (19161996) was professor of sociology and chair of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago where he also taught. He was a pioneer in bridging the gap between theory and data in sociology. Joseph Gusfield is Emeritus Professor in Sociology at University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago and taught there, at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, at the University of Illinois before going to UCSD. Among his major

Social Stratification and Mobility in Central Veracruz
$35.04
Since the Revolution of 1910, Mexican society has undergone a profound transformation, characterized by the disempowerment of the landed aristocracy and the rise of a new ruling class of plutocrats and politicians; the development of a middle class of whitecollar professionals; and the upward mobility of formerly disenfranchised Indians who have become urban, workingclass Mestizos. Indeed, Mexicos class system today increasingly resembles that of Western industrialized nations, proving that, while further democratic reforms are needed, the Revolution initiated an ongoing process of change that has created a more egalitarian society in Mexico with greater opportunities for social advancement. This authoritative ethnography examines the transformation of social classes in the CordobaOrizaba region during the latter half of the twentieth century to create a model of provincial social stratification in Mexico. Hugo Nutini focuses on the increased social mobility that has affected all classes of society, especially the rural Indians who have taken advantage of education, job opportunities, and contact with the wider world to achieve Mestizo status. He also traces the transfer of power that followed the demise of the hacienda system, as well as the growing importance of the middle class. This description and analysis of the provincial social stratification system complements the work Nutini has done on the national class system, centered in Mexico City, to offer a comprehensive picture of social stratification and mobility in Mexico today.
