Pool Lifts Wheelchair
Is it possible in Vancouver, B.C., Canada to hire a personal care attendant (PCA) to take my friend swimming?
Friend has Muscular Dystrophy, is in a wheelchair and would like to swim with me. I live near a great pool and I'd like him to come but his wife is his PCA and, frankly, she needs a break. Also, she doesn't like swimming. Is there a reasonably-priced service featuring qualified attendants here who could be contracted for this purpose? Gosh knows, I'm not strong enough to lift him, etc. Any ideas? Also, alas, money is an issue.
Yes, the pool has a hoist, but he needs help showering, dressing. Alison, Biblitz thinks you're a saint! I'd be very, VERY interested to know your views on disability benefits/supports, including respite care when full-time PCA needs a break - what's available, what's needed, etc.
My guess is that even if there was a PCA who could help you, they're not likely to be able to help lift your friend into the pool. You really need to find a swimming pool which has either a pool hoist or a ramp and pool chair. I work as a PCA in Australia, and we're not allowed to lift clients at all for OH&S (occupational health and safety) reasons.
That said, I am also a carer for my boyfriend who also has muscular dystrophy and also does hydrotherapy when he gets the chance. We are struggling to find an accessible pool, but I will take him in as I know all the exercises and he trusts me with his life (and doesn't trust a lot of other people).
We did a course of hydrotherapy with a hydrotherapist about 1 1/2 years ago, but we couldn't have had anyone else to help. He went to his MD specialist (neurologist) and sought referral to a rehabilitation hospital and another doctor. Then we had to apply for a day programme at the hospital to do physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and dietetics. We now want to continue with the hydrotherapy, but can't find an accessible pool which will accept us.
Perhaps you could ask the swimming pool management and ask if they have any suggestions, and possibly he could speak to his specialist/doctor and seek referral to somewhere??
I don't know how things work in Canada, but I can't imagine things are any easier than they are here.
