Patient Wheelchair Transfers
Transferring a patient from the bed to the wheelchair,what side does the wheelchair go on?
Place it on the side where the patient can best grab it, if they're able. That way they can help. If they aren't able to help, get a transfer board and place the wheelchair on the side where YOU are most comfortable. I'm right handed so I place the chair on the left side so I can push off my stronger right leg and arm.

Is this the right job for me?
I am taking class's for nursing assistance and it is going well. I catch on to the book work as well as the hands on rather quickly I get good grades. I am worried about the strength factor. I am a very small framed person with rather weak arms. Family members are pointing this out questioning why I want to do this. The profession deals with a lot of transferring patients from bed to wheelchair and my strength plays a big roll in assisting with this. I am supporting someones well being and life in my arms. Will these things be reason for someone to not want me working for them? Will it be hard for me to find a job cause i am so small? I know that men are always the first to be hired cause of their strength. I am starting to get worried.I didn't even consider this apon starting.
Men are not hired just for strength. It is a sexist view to believe that. The reason men are hired more easily is because we do lack male health care workers. It is not just strength but think of the patients and what they may want because for any nursing profession it is about the patient. Some patients would prefer a male attendant.
As for the main point of your question, do you think that this is the right choice for you? Your insecurities only started when others commented.
Being smaller in size will not limit you in being a nursing aid. Transfers are rarely done by one person, and if they are there is equipment to assist you and there are certain techniques that make it easy. If your grades are good and you know what you are doing then it doesn't matter what size you are. I am in a nursing program and some of the women I am in classes with are tiny but I am sure they will be fine when performing their duties. If you feel that your arm strength is not adequate you can always improve it. Also, don't be surprised if you are stronger than you think.
