How to patch a ceramic tile shower floor.The grout came loose and a few of the one inch tiles seem soft and?
one actually caved in. I have some experience with tiling regular floors but there seems to be no substrate on which to lay the tile. I am trying to understand how a tile shower is done.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. I just need to get the shower patched, aesthetics aside, so it is usable, unable to use now without the water going under and into the shower pan and worsening the problem.
I'd say you have the first signs of a serious problem.
Keep in mind that the tile/grout is not a water proof layer. Water does soak into the concrete below the tile in a properly constructed shower floor. It is supposed to be caught by the liner and carried by the liner to the drain [there are weep holes at the drain to catch the water in the concrete] If you have leakage beyond that [water stains on the wood, mold, rotting wood or dripping water] you really should fix the problem soon.
If there is no leaks below, a "temporary" quick fix would be to dig out any loose material, let the area dry out completely and fill the missing concrete with a sandy mortor mix [add "play sand" to a standard morar mix bag, one measure sand to two or three measures of mortar mix] Add very little water and mix to a very dry consistency. You should be able to make a ball in your hand without it sticking to your hand. http://www.johnbridge.com/deckmud.htm.
Once this concrete has cured for at least 24 hours, you could reset the loose tile(s) with thinset mortar. DO NOT use mastic or premixed thinset.
