Narrow Door Way
How do I lay out the furniture in this child's bedroom?
The room is 16X16
The entrance door shares a wall with the double door closet.
The adjacent wall has one tall and narrow window all the way to the left (when you walk in, you're looking across the room, right at the window.
The room will have a twin bed. Please help!!!
The window is the focal point, so place the beds on the side of the window, not infront of it and make sure they are child safe blinds. Put dresser on wall by entrance if will fit between entrance and double doors, or even maybe inside closet.

Reduce Door width from 24" to 23.25" and secure outward opening door?
Hi - I am replacing the back door that leads to the garden and need two bits of advice.
Firstly what is the most effective way to reduce the width of a Premdor Frame Ledge and Brace (matchboard) 24" wide door by 3/4", and to which side should I reduce, e.g. both sides and get a narrow mortice lock or just the hinge side?
Secondly this is an outward opening door that I am going to make a final exit point. To comply with insurance I think that I will need 2 4" hinges, hinge bolts and a 5-lever BS standard mortice lock, anything else spring to mind?

There are several issues you will need to address:
1) The latch side of the door has a 2-3 degree bevel. If you are reversing the hinge side, you may need to adjust for this cut first.
2) You will have serious issues with resetting the striker (backset) if you don't plan for the results. If you have a 2-3/4" backset, you may be able to reduce it to a 2-3/8" backset. This would allow you to trim 3/8" off of both sides to reduce the 3/4" you specify. You will also need to route out for the striker. You will also need to route out for the hinges after you cut 3/8" from the hinge side.
If you cannot reduce the striker backset, consider cutting the hinge side only (except for adjusting the bevel). If it is a slab door, no problem, but a patterned door, such as a simulated raised panel door, will display the difference.
3) For doors opening outward, consider if an obstacle such as snow will prevent the door from opening, preventing egress in an emergency. Also, consider that hinges exposed to the outside can have the pins removed allowing a locked door to be opened. The hinge pins will need to be drilled, tapped and a recessed pin installed preventing the pin from being removed.
For the obstacles on the job, I would suggest that you have a door blank prehung to your specifications, then reinstall the door and jamb.
