Clearly you never want to get blinded out of a tournament, and eventually the blinds (and antes if applicable) are going to eat you alive. So keep an eye on your M and once it gets below 3 you need to seriously think about pushing all in with any ace, king or pair. [M is the ratio of your stack vs. the cost of one orbit of the table, which would be both blinds and all antes].

Last time I played a live poker tournament I got average cards for a couple of hours and slowly doubled my stack. Then I hit a hot wave of cards and literally knocked 5 people out in five minutes (four of them two at a time). I was getting great hands and connecting with the flop. Then as one of the chip leaders I went card dead. I had to fold about 30 hands in a row.

I made the final table, and eventually pushed all in with A9s. The blinds and antes were insane at this point. Some retard called me with K2o, and hit two kings. It was a bizarre call since I had folded for so long and still had a big enough stack to cripple him if he lost. But that's poker I guess.

The point I am making is sometimes as annoying as it is, you have to wait for some cards. If you suddenly push with utter garbage it just takes one caller to kill you.

So be patient, but equally don't let your M get lower than 3 without starting to play pretty loose. But when you do take a stand be the guy that pushes all in first, don't be the guy that calls with a marginal hand.
