Handling characteristics with weight of car altered in the rear?
I recently had mounted a hitch and carrier for a motorized wheel chair on my Kia Optima 4 door sedan. Car weight is approx 3500lbs and the weight of the carrier and chair is approx 500-700lbs. I'd like to know if this added weight at the rear of the car will excessively alter the handling characteristics such as braking and steering. An answer from someone with actual experience driving a car with this configuration would be really helpful but I'll sincerely appreciate any knowledgeable answer. Thanks in advance.
It should be next to insignificant for normal driving. I doubt you're "pushing it" in a Kia to begin with, so handling isn't a worry. In rainy weather, it might make the rear "whip" a little more, but that's it. Just be careful in inclement weather. On dry pavement it shouldn't even make a difference. Braking shouldn't be an issue. Ever drive with a few people in the car? Notice the difference? Doubt it.
