How does processor speed affect performance?
I am considering puchasing a MacBook laptop to replace my current desktop as i need mobility. The laptop i had in mind has similar specs to my current pc, yet the only difference seems to be that the laptop would have a speed of 2ghz (dual-core), while my desktop has a speed of 3.4ghz(single-core). WOuld this drop in speed make a big difference, and if so how? thanks.
That's a tricky subject., but the quick answer is that faster is better, dual is better than single.
Surprisingly, depending on the programs you use, it may not make a difference. The cpu is processing instructions at the clock speed indicated, so it seems like you always want a faster cpu...BUT, some programs do not utilize these faster speeds. Word processing, for instance, uses a relative eternity between keystrokes and puts the processor into a "wait" state between each keystroke. Faster gains you little. Likewise for a dual vs single core.
For gaming and graphic processing, the results may be significant depending on whethyer the program leverages the dual core capacity. Generally, faster CPUs yield better responses, however, even here some programs will implement "waits" to help graphics project a realistic image.
Some applications, which read/write to disk and do a lot of uploading and downloading, don't really depend on the processor. A fast disk is better.
