The Wheelchair Accessible FlexiFold™ Ramp
DIY Mobility Ramps?
I'd like to build a few mobility ramps for my aging dog who is finding it painful to use steps. I've checked the price of ready-made ones but each one is in the hundreds, and seeing as I need a few, I just cannot afford them. I haven't had much DIY experience in the past but am the kind of person who can usually do whatever I put my mind to.
So can anyone tell me whether I'm being realistic? Also could you direct me to any sites with information on how to build them? I have some ideas but it would be a great help if I had instructions and what kind of equipment I would need. Thanks
First of all what a decent idea.
I've built a few wheelchair ramps in my day, but you don't need anything like that.
The building need not be an issue at all. What does matter however is the grade of the ramp/ how steep/ how many stairs/ etc.
I think my first attempt might just be plywood sheet, cut to the width of the steps opening, perhaps support it with 2x lumber if the dog is heavy enough.
The plywood sheet should probably be 3/4, and it might not be any more than "sheathing"
The plywood might also allow easy set up and removal, as well as flat storage.
Without knowing the depth/height of the various stairways, your dog might still have a problem navigating if the stair case is too steep. Consider that 3 steps on a porch might be OK for the dog, but going from a first floor to a second floor in a house might be as challenging as the stairs.
If the plank had to span a steep grade you could tack indoor/outdoor carpet to the ramp.
Also without knowing your notion of aesthetics it's difficult to know what you'd be OK with.
For an exterior application you might also have to consider some levels of liability with regard to any humans who might use the stair case, and perhaps do a more narrow ramp.
Initially however, I'd go with just plywood sheet; for a few reasons. Price/ Labor involved/Viability of judging whether or not the dog can use a ramp/ and securing it in some way that won't degrade/damage flooring/sidewalks/ etc.
