Mobility Cane
What is the physical criteria for driving a vehicle?
Reason I'm asking is that my father is 81, just had surgery, multiple bypass, has hypertention, enlarged heart, and other mobility issues, including having trouble turning his head and difficulty walking. He uses a cane.
Of course we, his children think he should never drive again, but he says he will. That's scary to us, but what can we do?
Does anyone know what conditions can keep someone from getting their license renewed, or how to take it away? I don't want to be controlling but we think our father may be a danger on the road.

I'm a retired police officer and spent 23 years on highway patrol. I investigated numerous fatal crashes where the driver was a senior citizen and after the crash the families had a similar story to what you just said and then said: "we should have done something".
I personally experienced the same thing last year with my 87 year old father. His doctor was aware and did not want to do anything about it as he did not want to be the heavy guy to have his drivers license revoked. This is something I also saw as a police officer where the family doctor of many years would not do anything.
What did I do? I wrote a letter to the Motor Vehicle Branch attention Driver Examinations. I did not say my father should not drive, I related the symptoms and characteristics our father displayed and observations I had of his driving. I then requested they do whatever they have to to ensure he meets their minimum driving standards. I'm not a doctor so cannot really say he is medically challenged (even though we know, but do not have the medical MD letters after my name). As result of my letter, two weeks later my father received a letter in the mail with a medical driving assessment form to take to his doctor. The doctor is now on the hook and is not really going to be the heavy guy and has to answer the questions properly.
The end of the story: Father had his drivers licence suspended/revoked.
It was tough to do, but that's tough love.

White Cane Day
Is there an agency in the greater Pittsburgh, PA, area that provides assistance dogs for the elderly?
I have heard of programs that train service dogs for the elderly. I was hoping to find a program that would provide a dog to assist with mobility and balance, fetching the phone, carrying small items, etc. My 73 year old Mom has mobilty issues and needs a cane or walker to ambulate and is alone during the day and would benefit from and be more active with a trained service dog. I was hoping to find such a program in or near the greater Pittsburgh, PA, area.
