Medicare Wheelchair Purchase

Can anyone help me find a used rigid frame wheelchair?

Here is my dilemma, I am a very active disabled person who is well for lack of better words Fricking hard on chairs because I am so active. Now the chair that I have now is falling apart, and of course Medicare will not help me purchase another. Recently the back axcel on my chair has broken, and caused some injuries to my kidney, chest and wrist. Heres the kicker, instead of paying for a new or even fixing the old medicare straight up told me they would rather pay for the Doctor visits (which by the way add up to the cost of 2 new chairs) then help fix or replace the current chair. Being that my wheelchair is falling apart I am unable to work do to the fear of being hurt at work. So I am unable to afford any other insurance. Any advise would be great! Thank You. I do apologize for my horrible spelling I was only able to use one hand.

Medicare is not big on paying for chairs damaged through what they consider heavy use or abuse. You are making a choice to be hard on the chair, so the state is making a choice to not pay for it.

What kind of chair do you use that has a back axle? Most have two axle bolts that can be replaced for about $10 each (http://www.ocelco.com).

In our state, 'heavy users' have two choices- get a doctor's script for a heavier duty chair, or pay for a better chair themselves. I'd go for a chair with a lifetime frame warranty and I don't particularly like rigid frames.

If you are using your chair for sports- shame on you for using the state to pay for your hobby. Wheelchair sports are automatically hard on chairs and one of the most common scams going on now is for users to keep getting the state to pay for chairs damaged in such abusive use.

You can also try to rig up a fund-raiser to cover a new chair. Bars, etc. often help.

Does Medicare pay for Wheelchairs?

Are they rented or is it a purchase?

Medicare starts with wheelchair coverage on a rental basis. If the length of time that is needed for the wheelchair starts to exceed the total price of the wheelchair, the patient is given the option to buy it with no further payments. However, it then becomes the resposibility of the owner to pay for any repairs that need to be made. Yet, what is tricky in this situation is that even after that time, the rental company can no longer charge for the wheelchair (to either the owner or to medicare). It can remain as a "rental" to the patient. The benefit of this is that if anything ever goes wrong, the provider fixes or relaces it at no cost to the patient. I always advise people to keep their wheel chairs as a "permanent rental"...they are not required to make payments and still get "coverage" on the wheelchair.

This information is related to manual wheelchairs in the non-custom category. If a power chair or custom chair is required, it takes further evaluation to determine eligibility. It is usually a team effort between a vendor, a PT, and a doctor.
