Approved for Medicaid.Eliminate private insurance?

Help. My dad is already on medicare just recently got approved for medicaid. He is currently in a nursing home. Before he got approved on medicaid, my step mom had him on her private insurance via her job. Since he is now Medicaid approved, can she drop him on her insurance? We are getting different answers from the case worker, nursing home & health care providers.

Once your Dad got approved for medicaid, you should be able to drop him from the private insurance.
Basically, your dad's primary insurance will become medicare and medicaid will act like a supplement.

Anything that medicare does not cover, the provider will try to collect from medicaid.
In most cases that I have seen, medicaid will deny payment and the provider will write-off the bill.

So it is a win-win situation.

Medicaid is the United States health program for eligible individuals and families with low incomes and resources. It is a meanstested program that is jointly funded by the states and federal government, and is managed by the states. Among the groups of people served by Medicaid are certain eligible U.S. citizens and resident aliens, including lowincome adults and their children, and people with certain disabilities. Poverty alone does not necessarily qualify an individual for Medicaid. It is estimated that approximately 60 percent of poor Americans are not covered by Medicaid. Medicaid is the largest source of funding for medical and healthrelated services for people with limited income in the United States. Because of the aging Baby Boomer population, the fastest growing aspect of Medicaid is nursing home coverage. Is a 70-year-old recent Cuban immigrant, currently working, eligible for Medicare?

My father is 70 years old and he immigrated from Cuba to the USA only 9 months ago. Soon after he applied for medicaid and was approved; however, he has not used it (gone to the doctor, etc.) so far. I know owing to his age he's entitle to Medicare, but since currently he works full-time and has no plans to retire for other ten years, I don't know if he can get Medicare for free. Can someone please guide me through the steps he needs to follow to get Medicare??

You have to work in this country for a period of time to get Medicare even though he is over 65. Medicare is not free even if he could get it. He already has Medicaid which is free.Medicare premiums are $110 a month plus he pays 25% of the medical costs. In some states if you have Medicare with zero share of cost, your Medicare is not deducted from your Social Security check but since he does not get Social Security he could not get Medicare. Since he has Medicaid, why would he need anything else? The only reason he has Medicaid is because he is a recent immigrant. If he continues to work, when his annual re-certification for Medicaid comes up, he may not be eligible if he has earned too much money.
