Medical Manual How do you APA reference a hospital policy that is only accessible to its employees via an intranet?
information I have:
title: st. john health policy
Manual section: administrative medical/nursing
Policy no. 654. Medication reconciliation
there are 11 pages
and I have the location it was retrieved from on the database C: drive.
Is it possible to do this in a legitimate way if the reader will technically not be able to access the document if they are not a hospital employee?
That's a tough one!
My understanding of APA Style writing standards (as of 2007 updates) is that for material gleaned from an electronic source that is not available to the general public (including professors and other researchers) use the words, "Available from" rather than "Retrieved from" and this simple -yet significant- difference in terminology indicates that the source being referenced may need to be purchased or otherwise accessed by a means other than a link to the web site.
As with all other sources, still provide the necessary information as needed for the reference.
I also strongly suggest you ask your professor how s/he prefers to reference something as unusual as an electronic source that is membership-based or exclusive of the general public.

The ideal resource for states needing to transition practicing EMT-Basics to the new EMT level, Emergency Medical Technician Transition Manual bridges the gap between the knowledge and skills based on the 1994 National Standard Curriculum and those in the 2009 National EMS Education Standards. Emergency Medical Technician Transition Manual offers focused discussions on critical knowledge areas and new skills. Each chapter opens with a summary of what EMTs should already know about the topic as well as a brief overview of the content that is new or addressed in greater depth in the National EMS Education Standards. Case studies at the end of each chapter help students test their critical-thinking skills and gauge comprehension. This concise program can be used for continuing education or bridge courses to the National EMS Education Standards.
