2004 4x4 Dodge Dakota ball joints?
I would like to know if I have to remove the steering knuckle to replace my lower ball joint on my 2004 dodge Dakota 4X4?
It is pressed in and my Chilton manual says "Some balljoint replacement tools are similar to a big heavy duty C-clamp. With this type of tool it is only necessary to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle"
What I would like to know if I can remove and install the lower pressed in ball joint without removing the front axle shaft or the steering knuckle.
Also I am thinking of replacing the upper ones but they are riveted on. What do you think about the upper bolt in ball joint? the kit says to drill out rivets and install ball joint with supplied bolts.

if you use the tool you have to press the ball joint all the way out on it and then use it to also press them back in with,the upper ones if their riveted you just cut off the heads of the rivets then you get new bolts with the new ones,on the lower ones though you may run in to problems because you do have to remove the knuckle from it,the replacement ball joints are actually better than the original ones was,you can slide the axle off to the side if you can remove the knuckle from it ,but i doubt that you,ll be able to do that,i usually just remove them,lately though i been replacing the whole lower control arm because you can buy one with new ball joints and new bushings in it about as cheap as you can replace the ones you have,be sure and check the control arm bushings real good on it,good luck with it.
