Making Home Wheelchair Accessible
I am looking for Finacial assistance to modify my home for my handicapped daughter?

I am a single mother of a 4 1/2 year old daughter that is physically Handicapped. I just recently bought our 1st home & I am looking for some form of financial assistance to make some modification to the home so that it is wheelchair accessible inside and out. I know that there must be programs (both government & privately funded) to help Lower income families in these situations. I have spent hours on the internet searching & found nothing that is clear… I am hoping someone knowledgeable in this area can help…. THANK YOU!
(I live in Texas- if that helps)

Contact your local social services or the dept of rehabilitative services. There are grants available to assist you with things like wheelchair ramps and etc....

Good luck!

The Accessible Home (Paperback)

Millions of baby boomers are approaching the golden years. While it?s a marker worth celebrating, it can also be a reminder of uncertain times ahead. How will I manage? Can I stay in my home? The Accessible Home goes beyond ramps and grab-bars to help aging boomers, or those faced with disabilities, accomplish home accessibility on a deeper level. With a focus on closing the gap between home and homeowner, architect Deborah Pierce leads readers through the steps of universal design?from hiring the right architect to creating a pleasing space with the final details. Plus, an insider?s look at 25 case studies shows that the best design is built in, not tacked on, and that ?accessible? can be both beautiful and functional. The Accessible Home empowers people of all ages and challenges them to create homes that restore independence and the grace of daily living.

You didn't say which area, but I would suggest starting with your state's Department of Rehabilitative Services and your local Social Services Dept.

You can also contact local American Legions, Jacyees or Civitan groups. They sometimes provide donations towards projects like this and sometimes will even take that on as a project.
