What can a 22 year old horse do?
I am maybe buying a 22 year old horse that I have known since I was about 11 years old, (I'm turning 16 in just over a week)
He loves to jump! but he has been used as a companion horse for the past year but that horse has died so I have been offered to buy him 
( my first horse!!)
What I'm asking is, apart from lunging him, how would i go about getting him back into work? And how high could I jump him? ( he has not got arthritis ) he is 14.2hh, almost 14.3hh I'm 5.7 tall but very lightweight! I am not a huge jumper, my record would be about 75cm and I'm not at all bothered about jumping absolutely huge! I am also allowed to take him to the beach. Opinions anyone?
My advice to you, as the owner of a 21 year old horse, is to take it one step at a time. Bringing him back into work too fast could hurt him. However, exercise is good for an older horse and the longer you keep him on a regular schedule of riding/lunging etc., the longer he will stay strong, fit and healthy. I don't know what his capabilities were before, and I don't know how long he's been out to pasture, so I can't tell you how high he should be able to jump. This is a question your veterinarian will be able to answer. Don't be afraid to call your vet and get an opinion. And listen to your horse! He will let you know if he's straining or tired or going to far. My old gelding is still jumping 2'6" and giving lessons 3 times a week, and he's never been lame... not even arthritic. So it's possible, just be careful!
