Where can I find an "electric" motor that is capable of lifting 500 lbs straight up and down, and how much $?
you can put a lot of pulleys in the syestem to even out the weight so then you would be able to use a less powerful motor it is up to you though.

Efficiency of an electric motor lifting a weight?
I am putting this q. in Maths with the hope that it catches a dual maths-physics enthusiast's attention.
When a motor connected to a battery of e.m.f. E raises a weight,W, part of the electrical energy is converted to mechanical energy.
Suppose the motor is lifting the weight at constant speed, v, raising it through height h in time t.
But as the coils of resistance R turn at a steady rate and the steady current is I, a back emf B is induced in the coil, reducing the effective emf of the battery to E - B. The battery also has an internal resistance r.
My question is, find an expression for the mechanical efficiency of the lifting process in terms of (some or all of ) the quantities given above.
The mechanical efficiency of the motor can be expressed as (mechanical work out)/(electrical energy in) or as (mechanical power out)/(electrical power in).
Using the power version -
mechanical power out = force*distance/time = Wh/t
electrical power in = I*terminal voltage of motor
ignoring the resistance of the connecting wires, terminal voltage of motor = terminal voltage of battery
terminal voltage of battery = E - Ir
so electrical power input to motor = EI - rI^2
Efficiency = Wh/(EI - rI^2)t
The overall efficiency of the energy conversion process is slightly different. This would be defined as -
(mechanical power out)/(electrical power generated by the battery).
electrical power generated by the battery could be calculated as EI, and efficiency would then be -
Wh/(tIE)
This is perhaps a more fundamental expression, since in the previous one, the power dissipated in the internal resistance of the source is ignored.
However, I think that 'the mechanical efficiency of the lifting process' is best represented by the first expression since this phrase concentrates attention on the motor. Moreover, your initial question is 'Efficiency of an electric motor lifting a weight?'
It seems to me that the second expression would be a good answer to the question 'what is the electrical efficiency of the lifting process' since IE represents the whole of the electrical power involved, not merely that supplied to the motor.
