Lifting Assist Seat
Getting up after a fall. Lifting techniques or gadgets for the elderly?
My elderly parents live in their own home. Problem is mum has arthritus. She is ambulent and uses a walking frame but, unfortunately, has occasional slips/falls, eg missing her seat when trying to sit down. None of these falls have left her injured so far which is a relief. However, it's hard for her to get up from the floor solo and becoming increasingly taxing on my dad when he assists.
Is there a technique or easy, portable gadget to help with this? All I can find online are expensive hospital lifting equipment, like hydrolic hoists, or techniques for manual lifts requiring 2 or more people.
Given there is an increasing number of people in my parent's situation I feel there must be something out there to help. Happy to consider any ideas.

There really aren't any "gadgets" for lifting people off the floor. As you've found out, a lifting hoist requires 2 people and can cost thousands. My suggestion would be a visit to a physiotherapist. They can give really good advice about 1) falls prevention or at least minimising them. ( Missing the seat when sitting down, for instance, is an easy one to prevent, using simple techniques.) Making the house more "user friendly" is another area where they can help enormously. 2) they can show the person how to get up safely after a fall, either alone or with another person's help.
One visit to the physio can prevent many falls and accidents, and result in a safer home. I'd highly recommend it.

Ladies, is this REALLY all that rare?
I was sitting in an aisle seat for my [totally booked] flight home last night, when a very small woman with a large carry-on bag asked the people across the aisle from me if she could have the middle seat.
I saw her viewing the space in the overhead bin with a look like "how am I going to lift this bag" expression, so I asked her if I could assist her by lifting her bag.
She graciously accepted my offer, and at the end of the flight when I brought her bag down to the aisle, she thanked me so profusely that it seemed that maybe no one in her life had ever helped her.
I thought that I had not done anything special, just behaving according to how I was raised. Ladies, are acts of common courtesy really all that rare???

I think it really is rare to see... I also believe it has a lot to do with the way people are raised. My son is 10 1/2 and we try to raise him the right way (i.e. open and hold doors for people, say please and thank you, and do things that just seem "nice" to do for a struggling stranger). My husband's family has been raised in that same manner. Very polite and respectful. As a matter of fact, a woman stopped us at the gas station once because she was totally blown away to see my husband open the car door for me. I informed her that all the men in his family were like that - she asked if any of them were single! ;o)
