Lift Seat Electric
VW PASSAT 2.0 (1999) needs new ECU (Electronic Control Unit) - how much will it cost? Where to get it done?
The under bonnet drain where the rainwater flushes through got blocked with leaves etc a couple of months ago and the inside passenger foot well of the Passat filled with copious puddles of water.
Since then, my electric windows, central locking and all interior/boot/ lights have not been working. The fuses are all fine and have been thoroughly checked by myself and a mechanic.
I have been informed that the Convenience System - Electronic Control Unit (ECU) will need replacing, which involves removing the passenger side front seat and lifting up the carpet trim.
Can anyone help out with a reliable and honest mechanic who won't charge me the earth in labour?? I hear that the ECU itself is relatively inexpensive but it is a "labour-intensive" task.
I am in Uxbridge area of Middlesex (UB1/UB2) so anywhere within 5-10 mile radius of that would be great.
Any idea of the overall cost??

As above, labour charges should be minimal, AS LONG as the connectors to the ECU haven't become too corroded by the water.

It may well be worth getting a second hand ecu - the new part may well be staggeringly expensive from a dealer, but again, a decent garage should advise you further & source used parts.

How do you tell a company the equipment is to old?
I recently started a job at a new business. Within a week forklifts arrived. There were about 20 lifts from clamp trucks to sit down lifts. These lifts had no or broken seat belts, no horns or broken horns, (you have to shout at a person to let them know your coming and sometimes they still don't hear you over a semi-diesel engine and 20 forklifts buzzing at one time). The headlights are either gone or broken. Little things not so bad..but last month we had one leaking battery fluid (they're electric sit down fork lifts) so we told the supervisor and he said he would have it fixed, 3 weeks later someone was driving it with the same complaint and it still wasn't fixed. Also some of these ancient looking lifts have no brakes or very little to loud squealing or metal on metal grinding. The boss told us someone had got backed over and suffered permanently from it,but has made no attempts to better safety. Isn't there a guideline or standard to help with businesses neglecting equipment??
Call OSHA and tell them to come inspect them.
I once worked as a driver for a company that did similar maintenance with their trucks. I was stopped for not having brake lights. I told the officer that it also didn't have turn lights, the headlights were out of alignment, the horn didn't work and it had lousy brakes.
The company fixed it all.
