What's the medical term for a missing limb?
Serious question- I'm a nutrition student interning at a hospital and i'm trying to type up notes on a patient. The patient is in a wheelchair and is missing a leg. I don't know if the patient was born like that or if it was amputated. What's the appropriate thing to write in my notes? Would it still be called an amputee if they were born like that? If you're wondering what this has to do with nutrition, i'm supposed to state the patient's physical activity/exercise (including physical therapy) in my notes. I need it to sound professional. I don't want to just write, "missing leg."
Would it be ok to just write "possible right transtibial amputation or Amelia (unsure of condition)"?
If it's a clean residual limb, chances are it was an amputation. Congenital absense of a limb is usually met with some type of rudimentary appendages (such as a few fingers or toes). If the person who you are referencing is above the age of 60 and/or has a history of uncontrolled diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, I would put money on the fact that it's an amputation. From what you are describing, it sounds like he has a below knee amputation.
