AGAIN - What is the best battery for an electric vehicle?
This question was asked 2 years ago when there was an optimistic expectation that ultracapacitors, lithium iron phosphate, and other battery technologies would soon be available at affordable prices. Well, ultracapacitors (such as the design being developed by Eestor) are still on the horizon, lithium batteries must be assembled and are very expensive, and maintenance free lead acid AGM batteries have turned out to be unreliable and expensive (ask any Zenn owner).
The answer, for now, are deep cell flooded lead acid batteries. In my opinion, they are at this time the ONLY answer for a reliable battery that doesn't break the bank. Hopefully something better will come along before this decade is out.
Did people predict 2 years ago that lithium batteries would be cost effective already? Lithium-iron-phosphate batteries are driving BYD's cars (coming soon), so the tech is obviously being used somewhere.
I still think lithium is the best option, I just think it's going to be a few more years (possibly more like a decade) before they're truly cost effective.
Lead acid batteries just don't have the energy density for cars, you need 3 times the mass in batteries for the same distance:

Lithium-ion batteries are currently about 2-3 times too weak for fully electric vehicles, but it looks like we'll eventually get there.

What is lead acid, gel and AGM batteries?
A lead acid battery is a standard car battery.
A gel battery is one where a gel is used in place of the water. The advantage is that it is sealed and wont leak if tipped on its side.
AGM batteries are absorbed glass mat batteries. Thye are sealed. They do not need silica gel because the acid is absorbed in fiberglass mats. It can not leak out. They come in starter and deep cycle.
