Do I have to bring the base of the car seat..? Serious answer only pls!?

I am trvlg on a plane with my 9 mth old daughter and I bought an extra seat for her. I will be bringing her car seat but I am wondering if I need to bring the base of the car seat with me. I lost my user manual so pls don't tell me to look it up. I need advise from mothers who hv travelled with their baby and brought their car seat. Also my car seat is 18 inches wide, will this be a problem? Thanks in advance.

I'm a former Flight Attendant and I now fly a lot with my own three children. I always bring a car seat.

MOST infant car seats are **not** supposed to be used with the base. I said most because I have been informed that there are one, perhaps two which do require the base for airplane installation.

I actually had an infant carrier which didn't have a base (not convenient nor recommended ;) . If you are flying an U.S. company, make sure your seat is FAA certified. It'll have a sticker shown in this link from the FAA;

http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

If you are flying a non-U.S. company, see the information for your airline. If you search with the name of the airline, followed by "children", that will usually give you the right page.

See if your seat is UN approved. Go to page 9 in this document;

http://web.nbaa.org/public/ops/ac/AC120-87A.pdf

Bravo for buying the extra seat and for bringing her car seat. This is actually the only way to fly safely with a baby.

Contact your manufacturer and try to get another copy of the owner's manual. This is a good idea for general use, not just for flying. There is usually a page that talks about use on aircraft.

Please get comfortable with the seatbelt installation. You probably use the base routinely so go out to the car and practice, better yet, with just the lap belt. Don't do it for the first time with people shoving past you on the aircraft during boarding. You don't need a locking clip because airplane seatbelts don't retract.

This is just an idea but think about perhaps not bringing the base with you at all. This depends on how much you'll be in the car and how long you'll be gone. If it's just a quick visit and you're not spending too much time on the road, the advantage of not having to haul the base around might outweigh the convenience of having it with you. Definitely access your own needs on this tip!

I wouldn't worry about the width. I never saw a car seat removed from a flight because it was too big. There are some big thrones out there too! Especially not an infant seat. You say 18" but I'm assuming that's at the widest point. Remember that you can jiggle the armrests and slide it in from the front if you have to. Please don't panick if you find out that the seats are narrower than this. It also wont matter if it "spills" into your seat a little.

Also, remember that they're not required to go by a window. They just can't block someone else's access to the aisle in the center of a "wide body" (two aisled aircraft).

I'm going to cyberlly pat you on the back further for using the seat. This means that it will get to your destination without risking being damaged or lost in luggage. On my last transatlantic with my kids, three of our four bags didn't make it but since we had the car seat with us, my daughter was safe for the 2 hour drive home (the bags arrived 2 days later). I saw at least two car seats in the lost luggage area while searching for our suitcases. Wonder how they got home...

Whatever you do, make sure you have something to place the infant seat in. Don't walk around the airport with it banging against your knee (and killing your back!) If you have a travel system, you can use the stroller until you get to the door of the aircraft and then it'll be "gate checked". If not, use a stroller frame for it, which works just as well and is what I did.

You'll get it back at the end of the flight by the door of the aircraft when you arrive. Be sure to ask which door to exit to avoid having to walk around again. They may announce where the wheelchairs and strollers are located on landing.

With either a stroller or stroller frame, bring a bungee cord and double secure it before leaving it at the door of the plane. They can get damaged if they pop open en route. Make sure the claim ticket can be seen and isn't squished or hidden.

Here are just some general flying tips;

Bring at least 1/3 more diapers than you think you'll need. I saw so many parents run out on flights when I was working! Wrap them in plastic bags and throw a bunch of rubber bands around them to save room in your carry-on.

For a formula fed baby, I really recommend using the bottles with plastic liners. Traditional bottles are too difficult to wash onboard because of the kind of sinks on airplanes. I premeasured the powder and rolled them up, placing the rolls in a ziplock bag. Then you throw the liners away as you use them and only have the ring and nipple to clean.

If you use bottled water, be sure to give yourself enough time to buy some once you're past security. Make sure you have enough! The water on the aircraft is filtered tap so decide if you're comfortable using that for your baby. Bottled water runs out fast on flights and we never had any extra for baby bottles.

Be sure you baby does not need the bottle warmed. Get him used to a room-temperature bottle before leaving. This is unnecessary health-wise and a real pain to do while travelling. I warmed many bottles on my flights but I wasn't there in the check-in line, the security line or the waiting area! Babies do great with room-temperature bottles.

Make sure you have at least one change of clothes. I would bring two. At that age, I simply dressed mine in sleep suits for flying. No one will care so keep him comfortable. Bring extra socks if he crawls so that he doesn't pick up anything nasty on the floor and to keep his hands clean.

Hopefully you have a good baby carrier. They're so useful for flying, especially at this age. I had a sling but other parents swear by their wraps and pouches. The Ergo and Becco are other popular carriers for travel.

I liked the sling because I could slide my babies from into and out of a stroller or car seat without waking them. It also doubled as a blanket, baby changer, breastfeeding cover-up and sunshade! My sling was magic for calming my babies during the flight. Other parents wanted one when they saw how easy it made my travels. Avoid front packs like the Bjorn since they're so bad for both the parents' and child's back. A good carrier should go to at least age 2.

Many flying tips say to make the child suck on something or drink during take-off and landing. This isn't accurate. ENT specialists say to have the child awake about an hour before landing (top of descent, landing or touch-down is too late).

http://www.entcda.com/AAOHNSF/earsandaltitude.htm

I can confirm that is when I saw problems at work. Take your child to the doctor in the last few days before you fly to make sure his ears are clear and infection-free. Heathy ears can handle pressurization changes but if there's something wrong, no amount of sucking will relieve the pain. Ear infections can damage so don't risk it.

About 8 years ago, I wrote an article on flying with children for an expat newsletter. Over the years many parents have contributed, both on line and in Real Life. I later put it on a blog so that parents had access to non-commercial information from someone with both practical and professional experience on the web. I'm in the middle of re-editing it (especially with more car seat info) so check back if you're not flying in the next few days.

Have a good flight!

1981 sunrunner 22' won't steer?

just purchased a 1981 sunrunner boat and i can't get it to steer. the wheel and cable seem to be free but if you try to move the drive on the outside of the boat it only moves freely about 1/8 inch to either side. does it have a steering lock for travel that i am not seeing. my last boat had just a manual arm that you installed before travel on the trailer but i don't se one here. is there a lever or button i am overlooking? the boat has been garage kept and is in excellent cond . the previous owner has passed away , so unless i can hire a psychic , any forthcoming info on the boat is null. any help would be great.

Disconnect the cable end from the tiller arm on the outdrive. This will tell you if the cable or drive is stuck.
