The company was traditionally based at Tamworth in Staffordshire, England, but in 2001 it moved to nearby Cannock. It ceased manufacturing cars shortly afterwards.Reliant was founded in the early 1930s by T L Williams in a disused bus depot on Watling Street in Fazeley. The initial purpose of the company was to take over the manufacture of the Raleigh threewheeler delivery van. Williams had designed this in 1933 and Raleigh no longer wished to produce it. It was powered by a 750 cc Vtwin engine driving the rear wheels through a 3speed gearbox and shaft drive. The first Reliant built version was registered on 1 January 1935. It is located on Kirby Drive at the 610 Loop. This complex of buildings encompasses 350 acres (1.4 km2) of land and consists of five venues: Carruth Plaza, Reliant Stadium, Reliant Center, Reliant Arena and Reliant Astrodome. The complex hosts many sporting events and conventions each year, the largest of which are the Houston Texans games, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and the Grand Prix of Houston. The complex is served by the Reliant Park Station, a light rail station on the Red Line of the METRORail light rail system. It also includes one of the worlds largest parking lots (holding 26,000 total) and sees nearly 750 events yearly. It has a glass fibre body and an 848 cc aluminum engine, providing economical performance. Chassis, engine, and running gear are shared (with minor modifications), with the Reliant Fox Utility / PickUp. In October 1976, a year after introduction, a new deluxe version of the Kitten, branded as the Kitten DL, was announced. Improvements included revised springs and dampers and a changed antiroll bar. Under the bonnet / hood were carburettor and air cleaner modifications, claimed to give better cold start characteristics, while interior improvements included more comfortable seats, modified door trims incorporating a map pocket, and a new style tray to cover the luggage space behind the back seat. The stadium is part of the Reliant Park complex. It opened in 1965 as Harris County Domed Stadium and was nicknamed the Eighth Wonder of the World. Major League Baseball expanded to Houston in 1962 with the Houston Colt .45s, who were in 1965 renamed the Houston Astros. Roy Hofheinz and his group were granted the franchise after they promised to build a covered stadium.
