As a CNA, what things must be considered when giving care to a person with multiple sclerosis?
Such as skin, urinary & bowel, mobility, rehabilitation.
basically anything a CNA would have to do to take care of a person with MS in a nursing home.
My step-mother had MS and as i got older I spent a lot of time taking care of her. I am unsure of old age and MS because my step-mother died from cancer at age 49. But this is what care cosisted of for me.
She had good days and bad days. With MS a person may be able to walk with a cain one week and be in a wheel chair the next then back to the cain. Their muscles can lock up and become extreemly stiff. ( her legs use to do this and they would shake) Some times the MS can attack different parts of the body. There were times that it was hard to understand what she was saying because she would slur her speach. HEAT makes all of this alot worse.. You don't want to have the person outside on a hot day for too long. Don't rush the person. .. It takes a lot of patients to help a person with MS. We all want to feel independent . So let him/her do what he or she feels capable of. Even if it takes a little longer.
Fluid can build up in the feet due to the immobility. especially if the person is confined to a wheel chair. Therapudic socks are used. I am sure you know what they are. The problem with this though is that you have to rase the legs to alow the fluid to drain and then put the socks on. and it is hard to raise the legs if the muscles are stiff. my step mother took fluid pills which helped a little.
You will need a chair in the shower. And two or more grab bars even if you are washing her she will need something to steady herself.
they can also develope urination problems either they urinate on themselve ( you need adult diapers) or the muscles contract and they are unable to urinate( you need cathader)
She also had days when she would be forgetfull. but do not assume that the person is always forgetful. They maybe one day and the next they will remember everythig and where everything is. If you assume that they will forget ...feelings will be hurt. They are very competent. Don't forget that. Their body just doesn't cooperate.
I took care of my stepmother off and on from the time I was 10 until she passed away when I was 23. There is a lot of heavey lifting. But mostly just caring about the person and helping when needed.
OH Yeah . If the person falls you can lift her or him by youself I have done it several times and she was a hefty lady. Make sure to lift with you knees. NOT YOUR BACK! if you can get the person into a sitting position stand behind them putting your arms around the body and chest. under the arms squat and push up with your legs.This is the most comfortable way for the person and easiest on you.
Also there is a medication that she took to stop the progression that you may have to administer. It is a shot that is taken once a week. It is taken in different parts of the body but they give you a chart. It was in trial when she was using it so I don't know if it is still used.

Activities for residents in care home?
I have just started as an activities coordinator in a care home and I am stuck for ideas for things to do with them.
Some of the residents are suffering from dementia, others have poor mobility and have suffered strokes etc.
So far we have played bingo, dominoes and made Halloween decorations, but I'd love to get some more ideas from you!
