Why are Drive Shafts on Front Wheel drive cars differernt lengths and not the same?


Why are the drive shafts different lengths on Front Wheel Drive cars and not the same length, like on rear wheel drive cars? Is this do to the positioning on the transmission and engine?

Rear wheel drive have the drive shaft and differencial right down the middle of the car. Front wheel drives usually (not always) have the engine transversly (sideways) and so the differencial tends to be next to one of the front wheels. Some manufacturers try to minimize this by putting the transmission and differencial behind the engine,
