Van Halen: David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar - 3 fold question?
1. Who was the better front man for Van Halen?
2. Who is the better singer - vocally?
3. Who's was the better solo artist?
Van Halen is easily one of the top 10 best Rock bands ever. The amazing thing about them is they went through a front man change 3 times and have still survived and flourished.
I like both Dave and Sammy. I like their songs equally.
Here are the answers. But the answers are dependant on time frame.
1. Dave edges Sammy during the hey day, but having seen Dave perform on the last Van Halen Tour - it made me want Sammy back.
2. Vocally, Like them both. Dave is better for the bluesy stuff, but Sammy has a great voice for rock tunes. I always did prefer Dave's songs from the early days. But he sucked during the last tour. Dave lost a step vocally, Sammy is still sharp.
3. The better solo artist is by far Sammy Hagar. Talk about iconic rock anthems! If it wasn't for Dave stealing a song from the Beach Boys, would he even have a solo career?
