Second Generation Wav-Evolution at the Mobility Roadshow 2010

Your thoughts on Human Evolution?

Based on Darwin's theory of evolution the strongest survive and live to pass on their traits to the next generation. However, in this day and age you see people 400 lbs in electric wheelchairs or whatever they are. In the wild they would be wiped out in a second. Yet these people, thanks to technology are allowed to live and reproduce, therefore passing on their undesirable traits to the next generation. Day by day there are more and more unfit people, fat, diseased, people that without the society and technology, would be unable to live. Considering this, do you think that humans as a species are devolving? I do not see us evolving in the present state at all. Your thoughts please.

Uh, yes, technology puts us firmly outside of natural selection. This is fairly common knowledge.

Regardless though, you've made a number of inaccurate claims here.

Firstly, non-genetic debilitating conditions are not inherited, so these people are mostly non-threatening to their children's survival.

Secondly, evolution is about survival of the fit, not the strongest.

Thirdly, there is no such thing as 'devolution', there is only evolution. Species can't revert. The closest thing to reversion is the presence of atavisms.

What is happening to humans is we are developing to become reliant on technology. It's hardly a problem, considering our world is becoming more and more advanced day by day. Sure if there's a cataclysmic event that removes technology we'll have difficulty surviving, but we also excel at perseverance so we would likely be back on our feet in no time.
