The building code requires that the angle between the ramp and the ground be a maximum of 8 degree for electric wheelchairs and 5 degree for hand propelled wheelchairs. The owner of the restaurant builds a ramp that starts on the ground 3.97 m from the building. The ramp is 4m long with a rise of 0.45 , Does the ramp satisfy the building code for both of wheelchairs?
The angle is:
arctan[rise/run] = arctan[(0.45m)/(3.97m)] = arctan[0.11335] = 6.46688 degrees
So, it does satisfy the requirement for electric wheelchairs, but it does not satisfy the requirement for hand propelled wheelchairs.
