Electric Wheel Chairs Question about aux batt install?
I have a friend that has a electric wheel chair and he wants me to hook up a auxuillary battery up to it so when it get low on juice you can flip a switch and run it off the secondary battery. I was thinking about using a solenoid and a deep cycle battery would this work? How would I hook up to the other batteries to do this? + to where - to where. could I put a solenoid between the origional battery and the secondary battery and have this work?
The battery would need to be a sealed type for safety. Remember a solenoid will use power. You have to know the battery ratings and the current requirements so you can choose the correct contacts. If you choose something rated too low you could end up with a fire on your hands. If the chair uses 10 amps, you will want something with contacts rated for at least 15 amps to provide a safety margin.
You will need a DPDT contactor with the common terminals to the chair, the NC terminals to the primary battery and the NO terminals to the aux battery. Hook up the control switch for the solenoid power to the aux battery, not the primary. Use the same size wires as are already in the chair for the power connections.
