Duty Mobility Scooter
How many mathematicians are there on here tonight?
Relieved of my car parking duties at our supermarket due to re-surfacing work and helping out in-store, I assisted an old lady in a mobility scooter by reaching up for a tub of Twiglets and accidentally dropped it which only dented her hat. Now she is suing the store claiming that she has occasional memory loss. The shelf was about half a metre above her head, items fall at 32 feet per second per second and the tub was a 200 gram pack. Has anyone the capacity to calculate the maximum damage that could have been inflicted given that this lady has a particularly thick skull? My lawyer is rubbish at maths.
the velocity of the tub at impact would be
given by v^2 = U^2 + 2AS
initial velocity assumed to be zero, the acceleration due to gravity in metric is 9.8m^-2
so V^2 = 0 + 2 x 0.98 x 0.5
so V^2 = 0.98 m/s
V = 0.9899 m/s
assuming the tub is hard, and does not crumple, and so the full force is delivered immediately,
a mass of .2Kg decelerates from a velocity of .9899m/s to zero instantaneously...
the Force needed will be 0.2 x .9899
= 0.198 KgM/s
Since you can safely assume that the pack of twiglets did indeed crumple, as did her hat, they will have absorbed almost all of the dangerous forces involved, decelerating the pack over a period of time, and spreading the forces delivered over a larger area of her head.
You have no need to worry.
