Dual Oxygen Tank
Huge ammonia problem solution?
I have a 47 gal column tank that I could not get right. Was setting it up for African Ciclids. Could never get the ammonia under control. Bought a very small air pump so I could put fish in a bucket in case I had to do a masive water change, tank cleaning. Didn't have time right away so I just put the stone aireator into the tank to the bottom. Within a week the water was clear and ammonia almost zero. Now I have it on a small cheap timer. Runs about 14 hours a day, off at night. I am thinking that it increased circulation at bottom of tank and increased oxygen helping bio-filter get established. Dual bio-wheel filter system. No more problems. Any body else with simular experience?
Been keeping a close eye on nitrites (zero) and nitrates (slighlty elevated but not seriously). PH is a dead-on 8.2.
It sounds like your tank just took a long time to cycle. If the ammonia numbers have fallen now is the time to monitor the Nitrites,they are just as toxic as ammonia. The Nitrite should spike and then go down to zero in a period of 3 to 4 weeks.
The air stone is definitely helping because both of the beneficial species of bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) require oxygen to do their work. No harm would be done by letting the air stone run around the clock.

I need help with my fish!?
Well first i was wondering how to get Oxygen into a fishtank without having a filter? my first thought was a Live plant but im not so sure about that but anyways... help me out with that (note its not for a beta its for white clouds and goldfish they are in diffrent tanks)

I mean anything bigger then that is better. But anyways i just was wondering if anyone uses/keeps there beta in somthing that size. but im not saying to put to bettas in it just one without that slat thing in it. My sister keeps her betta in it and it is happy as a clam.
to your first question, goldfish produce extreme amounts of waste and need filters. filters produce plenty of oxygen. plants both take and produce oxygen. air stones don't really aerate the water much. really the best way is to use a filter.
the problem with that is it's just not an adequate tanks. yes, they are in tiny cups in stores, but this is only because they fight with each other so they can't be kept together, and it would cost way too much for a store to have a separate heated and filtered tank for each betta. this is fine in stores because it is only a short period of time. these cups are not meant for permanent housing. now, here are a few reasons why these tanks are not adequate homes, and guidelines you should follow when buying a home for bettas:
*bettas do NOT live in puddles or muddy foot prints, they live in slow moving streams and rice paddies. while rice paddies do shrink during a short dry period they are not puddles. each male has his own large territory. this is a rice paddy: http://www.brents.com/organization/VacationImages/V2000Photos/BaliImages/images/Rice_paddy_view_from044.jpg
*the water bettas are in is usually between 80*F and 90*F making them tropical fish. so unless you live in a sauna or just like to keep your house nice and hot you need a heater for your tank. the smallest heaters are 7.5watts and aren't recommended for tanks less than 2.5gallons.
*bettas are actually quite active, keeping them in these tanks allows for little to no movement.
basically, keeping your betta in that is like keeping you in an unheated closet with no toilet. not very fun, but you'll survive. it's the same with bettas. I promise you if your sister would buy a better home for him he would get brighter, show his fins better, and be more active. bettas SHOULD live about 7yrs. this is because bettas are very strong, so they'll survive in tiny tanks, but not thrive.
